Storm Damage Prevention Tip: Gutter Cleaning

6/27/2022 (Permalink)

Storm Gutter Cleaning Watch your gutters! Should disaster strike your home or business and is damaged by Jersey storms, call us at 732-577-1010.

The Jersey Shore often gets hit with heavy storms during the summer.  Our summer storms are normally include heavy rains, strong winds, flooding in low lying areas, and thunder and lighting.   We have shared many tips on preparing for storms, as well as what to do in the event a severe storm causes damage to your southern Monmouth County home or business.

Here is another valuable tip to avoid future damage, make sure your keep an eye on your gutters.  Gutters are often an afterthought in home maintenance.

  1. Check your gutters for debris
    1. Get a sturdy ladder and secure it properly against your home
    2. If you find debris, start to clean it out
    3. Start at the end closest to the drain outlet and work your way across, loosening and clearing out debris in the gutter.
  2. Second, get your hose and wash out any leftover debris
    1. This time start from the end away from the drain outlet and work your way to the drain

Do this often and after storms.  Debris left in the gutters can cause backups, blockages, and can cause damage to your home.  A good way to check if your gutters need cleaning is spray water into the gutter to see if the water flows from the drain freely or it just trickles out.  If its flowing slowly or trickling, they probably need a cleaning.

Keep your business dry by following these steps to maintaining your commercial roof

4/30/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Howell/Wall Should storms damage your business, call the pros of SERVPRO of Howell/Wall at 732-577-1010!

How to Care for Your Commercial Roof

When summer storms pummel your business, naturally, the roof gets the brunt of it.  A damaged roof is a major threat to the structural integrity of the entire building.  This should make keeping your roof well maintained a top priority.

Here are some tips on how to care for your commercial roof:

1:  During the off season, make sure you perform a thorough routine inspection of your roof.  The best time of year to do this is when you can perform the inspection and make the neccessary repairs with minimal risk of precipitation.  It is especially important to check the following areas:

Drains and gutters: make sure they are clear of leaves and debris

Roof surface: make sure there are no cracks or exposed surfaces

Flashing and control joints

Inspect for signs of wind damage

2: Inspect the hardware that secures your roof-mounted equipment. Properly attached equipment will minimize roof damage in severe storms.  If you find the equipment is not secure, use qualified professionals to reattach them securely.

3: Know the load limits of your roof. There are limits to how much weight your roof can bear. Blocked drains during periods of intense rain can turn small roof ponds into large lakes. Record-breaking snow or snow followed by rain or ice can also cause load problems. Be prepared to deal with these situations when these circumstances arise.

4: Don’t forget to check the underside of the roof. If possible, look at your roof from the inside. If you see evidence of leaks or damage, add those areas to your repair list.

5: Roofs do not last forever. If your roof is old or showing signs of weakness, it may be time for a roof rebuild. An engineer can evaluate your current roof and recommend a course of action.

Storms can cause even the best-maintained commercial roof to fail.  Roof damage never happens at a convenient time.  When Mother Nature comes raging through, let it be of comfort to you that we are to help with any damages that storms leave behind.  At SERVPRO of Howell / Wall, we are available to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to service your lower Monmouth County business or home.  Just give us a call at 732-577-1010.

April Showers Bring May Flowers and More...

April Showers May Flowers April Showers wreaking havoc on your Monmouth County home or business...Call the Water Restoration Pros of SERVPRO of Howell/Wall at 732-577-1010

Here we are at the end of March after a long, snowy winter and April is around the corner.  As we turn our calendars and the season change, we will start to experience the warmer weather we all missed.  As the warmer weather approaches, so do the April showers which help to bring us the most vibrant May. However, when April showers are more like torrential, relentless downpours we could face a flooded basement and other water damage causing costly repairs. Flooding generally occurs in the springtime as the result of heavy rains that cannot be adequately absorbed by the still thawing earth. Particularly formidable are the flash floods resulting from thunderstorms, swiftly melting snow, ice jams in creeks, and then there is the fearsome “El Nino." Consider if more than one of these circumstances happens at the same time, you have the potential for a catastrophe with flooding waters and raging mudslides.

Homeowners you can take some simple precautions to secure your property and keep your possessions safe.

Elevate: Keep your furnace, water heater, electrical panels above predicted water levels to protect yourself from costly home replacements.

Install check valves: These valves close to prevent the backward flow of liquid and prevent water from backing up into the drains in your home.

Build barriers: Use sandbags to create flood walls to prevent or reduce flow of water into your home.

Waterproof the basement: Use a waterproofing compound to seal the walls of your basement.

Clean: Clean gutters, drains and downspouts for proper water flow.

Purchase flood insurance: Most standard homeowners' and business insurance policies unfortunately do no cover flood damage. In the event of a flood, you would be responsible for covering the full cost of repairs and replacing items damaged.

Should disaster strike and the April showers cause water damage to your home or business, the pros at SERVPRO of Howell/Wall will be there to help get you back to normal.   Contact us at 732-577-1010 and the highly training water experts will be there for you. Are you prepared to handle the different types of storms we can experience in Monmouth and Ocean counties?

10/15/2019 (Permalink)

Here in New Jersey, we can see a wide range of storm. We have seen heavy rains, flooding, super storms, hurricanes, and even tornadoes (remember the June 2017 Home Depot  in Howell)!  Any one of these storm types could cause major damage to your home or business. The damage caused by these storms can keep us from feeling like our home is complete or keep our businesses up and running.  No matter what your scenario, It is important to know the different damages that a storm can cause and more importantly that SERVPRO of Howell/Wall will be there for you should disaster strike.

Wind Damage Storm damage sometimes includes severe wind damage. Roof damage in this situation may range from a missing roof due to strong winds that may loosen flashing. This can cause your roof shingles to be removed from your home or business causing leaks. Even a subtle roof leak can produce damp, moldy conditions. A SERVPRO of Howell / Wall restoration expert can help property owners address storm damage and roof damage more effectively.

Flooding Damage Heavy rains can cause flooding in low lying areas or even sewers to back up. Flooding may disrupt municipal water systems which call for experts to assess groundwater and evaluate the condition of pipes following flood damage. Our SERVPRO of Howell/Wall team can assist in your cleanup process after flood damage has occurred.

Lighting Damage When a storm occurs, many times it brings the loud sounds of thunder which mean lighting is striking. Your home or business may have objects attached to the building that can attract a lightning strike that can cause a fire. A bolt of lightning can reach temperatures of roughly 30,000 kelvins (53,540 degrees Fahrenheit). Lightning strikes, or discharges of massive charges of static electricity, cause about 2% of all fires. If this occurs in your home or business, SERVPRO of Howell / Wall has the team to help handle the restoration of both the fire and smoke damage.

If any of these storms should strike disaster for your home or business, SERVPRO of Howell/Wall  is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  Call us anytime at 732-577-1010.

Should Flooding Occur, We Will Always Be on Call for You! Call SERVPRO® of Howell/Wall at 732-577-1010

According to the National Weather Service (NOAA), “Approximately seventy-five percent of all Presidential disaster declarations are associated with flooding.” NOAA lists the most common flood hazards in the United States as:

• Flash Flooding

• River Flooding

• Storm Surge and Coastal Inundation from Tropical and Non-Tropical Systems

• Burn Scars/Debris Flows (Caused by Wildfires)

• Ice/Debris Jams

• Snowmelt

• Dry Wash (Caused by heavy rainfall in dry areas)

• Dam Breaks/Levee Failure

Just because you haven’t experienced a flood doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. On average, floods cost $3.5 billion in annual losses in the U.S., and commercial flood claims average more than $75,000 (NFIP).

When catastrophic water damage happens to you, SERVPRO® of Howell/Wall can help. They can help you prepare ahead of time with an Emergency Ready Profile® (ERP), or respond to any size disaster to begin cleanup and restoration to get you back in business as soon as possible. SERVPRO® of Howell / Wall is ready to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Prepare your family for storms

6/23/2018 (Permalink)

Large storms and heavy rains have hit our area hard over the last few months, now is the time to prepare for whatever Mother Nature throws our way. An Emergency Supply Kit is a good place to begin.

An Emergency Supply Kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them.

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours.

Recommended Items to Include in an Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather
Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps
  • Phone charges with adapters to allow charging in an automobile

Keep our number handy as well, 732-577-1010. If you suffer storm damage to your home or property, SERVPRO of Howell/Wall can be there to take immediate action. We can help minimize secondary damages caused by severe storms.
